Saturday, March 18, 8:00 p.m.
- Schachter Freylekhe Tanzen
- Grieg Piano Concerto
- Debussy Nocturnes
- Stravinsky Firebird Suite
Stravinsky’s Firebird Suite will have your heart racing and put you on the edge of your seat with its driving rhythms. You’ll hear a 20th century orchestral legend with the shimmery sounds of Debussy’s Nocturnes, impressionistic music with a wordless choir. You’ll also hear U of M composer Schachter’s joyful piece Freylekhe Tanzen.
Guest soloist, pianist Anton Nel, says,“The Grieg Concerto that you’ll hear on Saturday, is an absolute joy to play. I’m always struck by the perfect balance he achieves in this work between brilliance and Norwegian folk-like lyricism. The opening of the concerto — like the first few notes of the Beethoven 5th Symphony — is one of the most recognizable gestures in all of classical music. I have many favorite ‘moments’ in it: the brilliant cadenza in the first movement, the dance episodes in the last movement, and the dreamy slow movement — truly the heart of the concerto.”
