Headlines

Hey everyone!

Okay, so it begins—our 80th Anniversary Season gets into full swing this month, with lots of events on which to report. You know, they say, "Birthdays are good for you. Statistics show that the people who have the most live the longest." Well, the A²SO has been around a long time, and it shows no signs of stopping. We have an enthusiastic and energetic fan base, we keep finding new pieces to bring to the Ann Arbor crowds, and we have talented soloists and players. We sound like Amy Winehouse!

Seriously, you'll love the season ahead, and it's great to be so close to starting.

Top Ten Reasons to Attend our "Roots" Opening Night Sep 20th

You know your Ann Arbor Symphony is going to be great when they take the stage at the Michigan Theater at 8 pm on Saturday, September 20th, but do you know why? Once you see these reasons you won't be able to resist attending! If you haven't yet bought your tickets, these reasons might convince you.

  1. You've always wanted to be on a CD. Well, this concert's Fetler work, Three Poems by Walt Whitman, is being recorded for our Naxos CD.

  2. When you hear Dead Composers, you shout "Carpe Diem!" Attend our Dead Composers Society event on the night of the concert, and you'll get a ticket, a personalized program, food, drink, and maybe even a prize--all for $26. More info on this is below.

  3. Dead composers are great, but you enjoy talking with living ones. Paul Fetler is coming into town and will speak to ticket holders at a free 7 pm pre-concert lecture with Arie Lipsky.

  4. You need to escape from the current political and economic climate, just for a while. Escape into music—the greatest music that ever was.

  5. One hand is fine, but two are better. You're probably familiar with Ravel's Piano Concerto for One Hand, but in this concert, you'll hear his Concerto for Two Hands (not the real title!).

  6. Louis Nagel is a rock star. He's going to play Ravel's raucous Piano Concerto. Watch as he moves across the keys with the greatest of ease. The man is a machine gun.

  7. You consider yourself a Bohemian. If so, you won't want to miss Dvořák's homage to his literal Bohemian roots, in the cheery Symphony No. 8.

  8. You believe that if all lawyers wrote poetry, this could be a just and equitable world. Tom Blaske, local lawyer and former UM tubist, will deliver Three Poems by Walt Whitman in this concert.

  9. You want to buy the painting on the cover of this year's brochure. Hal Higdon's painting, The Conductor, will be on display in the lobby of the Michigan Theater at this concert. Check with Hal about the price.

  10. You like paying $10-$15 for a concert. That's right, you can get in for 10 bucks. If you're a college student, you can pay $15 for the best available seats on September 20th. You may end up paying $15 for $47 seats!

This concert is sponsored by Borders and Comerica Bank.

Order tickets now for this concert in our online ticketing system or call 734/994.4801. Tickets range from $10-47 depending on sections and passes.

Dead_HeadThe Dead Composers Society is for Young Pros

If you or someone you know is 21-39 and gets their groove from classical music, then they need to know about A²SO's Dead Composers Society. This is a group of young professionals that gets together on concert nights for munchies, drinks, hang-out time and the concert.

You can do this on September 20th for $26, and that covers everything. We'll meet at the Roots concert at 8pm, then afterwards, we'll go out. You'll also get a coupon for 2-for-1 chocolate from the Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory just for coming to the concert with DCS.
