The Dexter High School Choirs is a combination of both of he auditioned choirs at Dexter High School that rehearse daily. This program includes students in grades 9-12 ranging from beginners to very experiences singers. The choir performs a broad range of music from jazz and pop to major choral works. These choirs have a rigorous performance schedule, including a Madrigal Dinner and many performances for the community of Dexter. The DHS choirs have been under the direction of Mrs. Julie Bassett for the last ten years. During this time, the choirs have consistently received Excellent and Superior ratings at Michigan State Vocal Music Association District and State Choral Festivals. The choir has also performed several major works in combination with the outstanding Dexter Orchestra and Bands. The Dexter Choirs have participated in performance tours to Germany, New York and Chicago and will be embarking on a nine day tour of Ireland this March.
Director, Mrs. Julie Bassett, is currently Director of Choirs at Dexter High School, Mill Creek Middle School and Creekside Intermediate. Mrs. Bassett holds a BA in music and a BS in vocal and instrumental music education from Concordia University in Seward, Nebraska. She has completed Masters course work in Choral Performance from Eastern Michigan University, where she has worked under the direction of Dr. Leonard Riccinto and Trey Jacobs. Mrs. Bassett is currently working on a Masters in Music Education from Florida State University. This is Mrs. Bassett’s 11th year teaching in Dexter where she teaches sixth through twelfth grade choir and is the vocal director for their Drama Club.
